Service That Extends Beyond the Siren

For more than a century, the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 80 has represented the members of the Saskatoon Fire Department – firefighters who stand ready, day and night, to protect their community. But their commitment doesn’t end when the sirens go quiet.

What began simply with firefighters wearing pink shirts during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, has grown into a powerful movement of awareness and action for breast cancer research.

Every year, Engine 12 gets wrapped in pink. As it travels through Saskatoon’s streets, it turns heads, starts conversations, and inspires generosity. Fundraisers like comedy nights and car washes have helped raise more than $87,000 in support of the C95 Radio Marathon for Breast Cancer Research.

Their commitment is deeply personal. Cancer is the leading cause of occupational death among firefighters. The risk is real, and that reality fuels their passion.

Beyond fundraising, they are prioritizing cancer prevention and early detection within their own ranks. A nurse practitioner now works with the association, helping firefighters establish health baselines and monitor for early signs of cancer.

Under the leadership of Charities Chair Jayden Poirier, a culture of giving back defines the union. Rookies quickly learn that service extends beyond emergency response.

Together, Saskatoon firefighters continue raising awareness, advancing research, and proving that courage takes many forms.
