Debbie’s Story

Pancakes with Purpose

What began in 2011 as steak nights organized by Debbie Markewich and her loved ones has grown into a cherished annual tradition: the Pebble Baye Pancake Breakfast. Fueled by the generosity of this Saskatchewan community, every plate is served with purpose.

Debbie knows that it takes a village to get through life’s challenges. At 36, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a bilateral mastectomy, chemotherapy, and over a year of treatment.

Debbie feels blessed that she could take time off work to heal. “I spent a lot of time in the Saskatoon Cancer Centre and met other patients who couldn’t afford to take time off,” she recalls. “I wanted to help give others the space and the time to heal.”

Each year, the entire village gathers for the $5 a plate Pebble Baye Pancake Breakfast. Everything is donated – food, time, and auction items – by a community with a shared commitment.

Proceeds support the Patient Care & Comfort Fund at the Saskatoon Cancer Centre, easing the burden for cancer patients and their families. From grocery and gas cards to free wigs and head coverings, or stocking the Comfort Cart with snacks and drinks, the Fund reminds every patient: you are not alone.

Now cancer-free, Debbie’s focus remains on making a difference, one plate at a time.
