SaskTel’s Story
SaskTel has built a culture of giving back to the people and communities of Saskatchewan. Tim Jones, SaskTel Manager of Internal Communications, describes TelCare as one way that employees put their generosity into action.
“SaskTel TelCare was started in 1950 as a way for SaskTel employees to engage with their communities. Approximately 20% of employees donate regularly to the TelCare fund through payroll deductions, and SaskTel contributes $0.50 for every employee dollar donated. Employees nominate charities each year and vote on where to invest their donations,” Tim explained.
Harry AD Allen Life Members sew quilted lap blankets to provide comfort to cancer patients
Since 1987, TelCare members have recognized the importance of supporting cancer care in Saskatchewan. Their annual donations have contributed nearly $350,000 to the Allan Blair Cancer Centre in Regina.
With so many charities doing important work in our province, Tim says, “There’s always at least one nomination for the Cancer Centre. It’s a cause close to many people’s hearts. Everyone is affected by cancer in some way.”
SaskTel helps employees learn the joy of generosity and it becomes a habit. When employees retire from SaskTel, many continue to make meaningful contributions to their communities through volunteerism with the SaskTel Pioneers.
The Pioneers are a network of over 4,000 current and former SaskTel employees from twelve clubs across Saskatchewan, including the Harry AD Allen Life Members in Regina.
A patient room at the Regina Cancer Patient Lodge will be renovated thanks to SaskTel TelCare
For years, Harry AD Allen Life Members have worked hard at their fundraising to supply head scarves, turbans and lap quilts all made personally by hand and free for cancer patients. Since 2007, the Harry AD Allen Life Members have donated $13,550 paying tribute to their lost members through memorial donations and with more recent donations supporting the Regina Cancer Patient Lodge and the Breast Screening Bus.
