Breast Screening Vehicle Unveiled

Starting on January 5, 2026, a new mobile mammography vehicle will begin providing approximately 7,500 breast screening exams annually, serving 42 rural and northern communities across Saskatchewan.

Thanks to your generosity and support, and a $1 million gift from the Kinsmen Foundation, this new and modernized unit will bring more timely access to breast screenings for patients across the province. The previous mammography bus purchased in 2002 will be retired after over 23 years on the road and providing over 250,000 screening mammograms.

Saskatchewan’s new white and pink breast cancer screening semi-trailer unit that says "Thank you Saskatchewan, Breast Screening Book Now 1-855-584-8228” on the back. The back passenger side contains large decals that say "Generously Provided by Donors Through Kinsmen Kinettes" with the TeleMiracle Kinsmen Foundation logo and Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan logos below. The middle contains the trailer has the Saskatchewan Health Authority logo and the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency BreastCheck logo along with large stripes in various shades of pink all along the side of the unit and a metal staircase and yellow handrails leading up to the entrance door. The front passenger side of the trailer has the words "Breast Screening" in large white letters at the top with another set of metal stairs and yellow handrails at the front passenger side.

“I want to express my profound gratitude to the Kinsmen Foundation, Telemiracle donors, and all the individuals, organizations and communities across the province that raised funds in support of this mobile unit,” Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan CEO Nora Yeates said. “Thanks to your generosity, dedication, and belief in the importance of accessible cancer care, women across Saskatchewan will continue to have access to locally available, life-saving screening services.”

Among Canadian women, breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death. Saskatchewan recently began lowering the age of eligibility for breast screening without a doctor’s referral as an important step in cancer prevention. Earlier this year, breast screening eligibility was expanded to women aged 45 and older, as part of a phased plan to make screening available to all women 40 and older by the end of July 2026.

A breast screening mammogram is a low-dose X-ray of the breast that plays an important role in finding breast cancer early. Approximately 75 per cent of breast cancers diagnosed through screening are early stage. Early detection allows for more treatment options and better outcomes. When breast cancer is caught at stage one, there is a 100 per cent five-year survival rate.

Early detection saves lives, and this new mobile unit will help Saskatchewan women access screening mammography close to home.

Did you know?

Two digital mammography machines for the permanent screening sites in Regina and Saskatoon were installed in April 2025! These machines were purchased thanks to a $1million donation from PTI Transformers, and have doubled the capacity at each of our largest centres. An additional 25 to 30 screening exams are performed each week. In Saskatoon, wait times are less than three weeks, and in Regina, wait times have decreased by three months!

The Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan is currently accepting donations to support the completion of a SECOND mobile screening vehicle which will be hitting the road Spring 2026. Learn more about how you can get involved.
